Dynamic vs condenser microphones in real rooms
Choose between dynamic and condenser microphones by room noise, source distance, gain, detail, monitoring, and the work the microphone needs to do.
Start with distance
A close dynamic microphone can reduce room pickup when the source can stay near the grille. A condenser earns its detail when the room and source allow more distance.
Check gain and noise
Low-output dynamics may ask more of the preamp. Sensitive condensers need phantom power and can reveal fans, traffic, and reflective walls.
Let the job decide
Live vocals, spoken voice, acoustic instruments, and ensemble recording reward different patterns and working distances.
